Presentation Description:
This full day workshop will bring in some outstanding talent to cover RSE and RDP.

Morning Session: The Very Best Things in RSE/RDP

In this session, we'll cover our very favorite things about using RSE to develop RPG code. RSE (as packaged in Rational Developer for Power Systems) is now the only editor that fully supports today's IBM i languages, since IBM has stopped updating SEU for new language features. But that's not the best reason to move from SEU to RSE.

Come to this session to let us demonstrate the productivity features in RSE that will make you wonder why you spent so many years using SEU! What will be your favorite? Perhaps the program outline, the verifier, content assist, filtering or simply the fact that the tab key works!

We'll cover some hints for getting started with RSE quickly and some handy keyboard shortcuts. Experienced RSE users may even pick up a new tip or 2 as well.

Afternoon Session: DDS Designer, Debugger and Hands On

After lunch, we'll demonstrate two additional tools in the RDP. We'll look at the RDP Debugger and see how three little letters (SEP) can make debugging batch and web/database-server applications as easy as debugging interactive programs.

Then we'll take a look at the newest tool in the toolset - the graphical DDS Designer for "green screens" and reports. Yes - the same tool for both, with features that makes SDA pale in comparison (not to mention RLU).

After that, it's Lab Time!

Bring your laptop because in the afternoon, we'll have a few lab exercises for you to choose from related to the topics we covered in the lectures. If you don't have RDP installed yet, we'll guide you through installation of the free full-function 60-day trial version - which you can convert to a full license after you become hooked on the productivity features.

Then you can choose from a variety of lab exercises - from introductory exercises for the RSE newbies to some more advanced tools for those already using RSE. If you're already an RSE user, you may want to try your hand at some features you may not have used before or take the new Screen Designer out for a spin.

You will probably not have time to complete all the lab options, but you will have your choice of a few different exercises to do during the lab session from around 3 PM to 5 PM.

About our Speakers for Tuesday April 10th:
Jon Paris and Susan Gantner
Jon and Susan make up Partner400, a consulting company focused education and mentoring services related to application modernization on the IBM i platform. They are also members of System i Developer, a consortium of IBM i educators who host the RPG & DB2 Summit events twice annually. Together with a small group of industry experts, they co-authored IBM's Redbook for RPG programmers, entitled: Who Knew You Could Do That with RPG IV - A Sorcerer's Guide to System Access and More. They are technical editors for IBM Systems Magazine - IBM i Edition and you can follow Jon and Susan's blog at http://www.ibmsystemsmag.blogs.com/idevelop

Jon’s background After 13 years of experience with “other” systems Jon fell in love with the System/38. This love affair ultimately led him to join IBM’s Toronto laboratory, working on the S/3X and AS/400 compilers. He played a major role in the definition of the RPG IV language and in promoting its use. Jon left IBM in 1998 to focus on providing OS/400 Application Development skills education. Together with Susan, he runs Partner400 and appears regularly at many technical conferences.

Susan’s background Beginning her career as a programmer for corporations in Atlanta, Georgia, Susan joined IBM in 1985 as a System/38 specialist. She moved to the IBM Rochester laboratory and later to the IBM Toronto laboratory, providing technical support and education for application developers. Susan left IBM in 1999 to devote more time to teaching and consulting. Together with Jon Paris, she now runs Partner400, and appears regularly at many technical conferences.
